Where are you seating your Dinner guests?

As every TV advert seems to tell us at the moment, the Christmas season is upon us. So barre for the Christmas presents to shop for, delicious seasonal feasts are needed too. Traditionally families get together over the Christmas period to feast on turkey and figgy pudding and if its your house the hordes are coming to where are you seating your Dinner guests?

Whilst we are forgiven for pulling up the piano stool or the desk chair, having a big enough table is paramount. Whether you have a traditional dining room, a living room diner or a kitchen diner, the dining table is a central feature.

Measure First

When choosing a cumbersome piece of furniture like a dining table it’s important to measure your space first. TOP TIP - No matter what size or shape your table is, you should allow at least 60-70cm on top of the dining table’s dimensions to allow people to take their seats. It’s a good idea to allow 90cm, for circulation space if possible.

Extend Into The Space

Extending tables can be ideal if day to day you only need say 4 seats, but on occasions like Christmas you need more. There are different types of mechanism with the two most common being centrally extending or extending from one or either end. Each of these require additional table top panels. Butterfly centrally extending tables store the additional panels under the central section. Note to self some tables have loose leaves that will need to be stored elsewhere. Plus to take into account that once fully extended you have enough room left to add chairs around the table.

Round Or Rectangular?

Depending on the shape of dining space that you have available may dictate the shape of table you choose.

Tucked Under Seating

Bench seating is not only a great way to get more bums in a row. But also benches tend to fit under the table allowing more circulation space when not in use.

Don’t forget that occasional seating doesn’t need to match – Do you have a bench in the hallway or kitchen that could be used as additional occasional seating? Think about multi-use furniture when planning your dining area especially if purchasing an extending table that you only need additional seats for on occasion.
